iWiM: BISON Weighing In Motion Systems by Fiber Optic for Advancing Traffic Safety in Thailand

BISONTE: Road Safety in Thailand

In 2024, iWiM, an Italian leader in dynamic weighing systems using fiber optic technology, successfully completed the installation of weighing sensors at over ten sites on rural roads in Thailand. The Ministry of Transport of Thailand initiated this project to improve traffic monitoring and safety on rural roads in various provinces across the country. For over 8-10 months, iWiM collaborated with local partners to tailor its solution to the unique requirements of each site, consisting of single, double, and triple lanes, and diverse road conditions.

A Comprehensive Approach to System Implementation

iWiM offers its clients a comprehensive approach to the implementation of Weighing in Motion (WIM) systems. The company handles production, installation, and operation, ensuring continuous monitoring over the years. iWiM technicians, in conjunction with the client’s team, planned and programmed the system installation. They developed the technical drawings for each site and monitored the completion of the work.

iWiM specialists customized the BISON software interface in the Thai language. This ensured seamless integration with the client’s systems, such as ANPR and context cameras. During the installation phase, iWiM provided on-site support to the client’s technical teams. Additionally, iWiM personnel organized training sessions for the client’s technical and management teams, as well as end-users from the Rural Road Department. These sessions covered the installation, calibration, and operation of the system.

Remote Support and Vehicle Classification

After installation, iWiM’s remote technical team worked closely with client technicians. Together, they conducted system checks, calibration, and implemented vehicle classification tailored to Thailand’s traffic patterns. The team also incorporated Thai vehicle classes into the software algorithm for classification. Once calibrated, the systems passed the Ministry’s acceptance tests, marking a significant achievement in advancing road safety.

iWiM provides ongoing remote support for system operation and user needs. With its comprehensive and client-focused approach, iWiM reinforces its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. The company is dedicated to developing cutting-edge solutions for safer roads worldwide.
